In You’re Not Fat, You’re Afraid, seasoned clinical dietitian and international actress Karen Connell unravels the complex emotions and societal pressures that dictate women's relationships with food and body image. With over a decade of experience, this powerful book dives deep into how our self-worth is detrimentally tied to our appearance and societal expectations, as shaped by pervasive beauty standards and media portrayals.
Through personal stories, patient interactions, and professional insights, the book exposes the emotional roots of eating disorders and the misconceptions surrounding food and self-image. Each chapter challenges readers to rethink what it means to feel good about themselves beyond superficial metrics of beauty and dieting.
This book is more than a critique of beauty standards; it's a pathway to understanding and overcoming the fears that hold us back from truly loving ourselves. You’re Not Fat, You’re Afraid offers transformative perspectives on how to heal, how to break free from the cycle of fear and self-doubt, and how to cultivate a life of self-acceptance, patience, and unconditional love.
Ideal for anyone struggling with body image or the emotional toll of striving for perfection, this guide empowers its readers to reclaim their power and rewrite their own narratives of self-love and acceptance, supporting women in their journey towards genuine self-discovery and liberation.
IT’S YOUR TIME TO UNCOVER THE MIRROR AND EMBRACE…
In this life, I have chosen to embark on a courageous journey to dive deep into what inhibits too many of us – confidence, or rather the lack thereof. Throughout my life, and especially in my work as both an actress and a dietician, I have been presented with the reality of disordered eating and body image issues. My hope is that by sharing personal anecdotes, professional insights, and uncovering these untold stories, I am able to present to you a powerful and liberating guide that allows you to rewrite your own narrative of self-love and acceptance, ultimately leading to a life of genuine self-discovery and empowerment.

Karen Connell is an Irish actress, model, dietitian and two-time teenage cancer survivor. Through her own journey and those of the people she met through her clinical work, she realized her demons were shared by many other people too – particularly women. She noted the way women thought their body, food intake and self worth were intrinsically related, with sometimes very painful results.
Why were women being conditioned to feel insecure, to compare themselves to other women, to simply never feel enough? While working in London hospitals, particularly with weight-loss and bariatric patients, Connell began to see that the heart of eating issues lay with one main emotion – fear. Fear of change, fear of love, fear of not being good enough – all these (and more) unchallenged fears took their toll on their victim – on their self esteem and then their weight.
The panacea? Courage. Trying the theory out on herself successfully first, Connell went on to teach other women what she'd learned and help free them from the tyranny of their own thoughts. With her remedy outlined on the pages within, you too can learn ways to question yourself and your thoughts, increase your self awareness and choose to feel good about yourself - regardless of what the scales say.
